Texas head coach Charlie Strong is searching for a quarterback that can take control of the game and manage the offense.

Texas has a lot of talent on offense, and with new offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert now in charge, there’s a buzz about what the Longhorns can do against Big 12 defenses. Now, all they have to do is find the right guy on the field to run and lead the offense.

Freshman Shane Buechele is likely the favorite, and head coach Charlie Strong has high praise for him.

“Shane’s a competitor,” Strong said in an exclusive interview with Campus Insiders. “That is really what you like at that position. Shane’s a gym rat. He’s always around the building. I was in there Sunday and I saw him. The thing you like with Shane is his work ethic and when you get a guy that, when all of a sudden everyone sees how he works, it just rubs off on everyone else. That’s what Shane has been able to do.”

Tyrone Swoopes and Jerrod Heard, who started 10 games under center last season, are not going to make winning the job easy for Buechele. The competition between them has brought out the players’ best.

“It’s made them better,” Strong said. “When you have someone that’s working, you have to go to work. That’s what you like in that position right now because the competition is there, how they’re approaching it, how they’re studying it, their total preparation of all three guys.”

Whoever wins the job will have to prove to Strong that he can not only manage the offense, but that he also possesses the trust of his teammates.

“Manages the offense. When you’re looking at a quarterback, can he go in and take control of the game,” Strong points as a deciding factor. “You’re going to have to get us in the right play, get us out of the wrong play. But do the players have enough confidence in and belief in you to realize that you that guy. Is he the guy that we really can count on?”
