A Florida Gators football recruiting update for the week of August 27, 2016.

Jim McElwain sure does know how to start a weekend.

Florida picked up two big commitments — one on Friday, one on Saturday — and both were on the defensive side of the ball. The first move came when 4-star prospect Fred Hansard, the No. 17 defensive tackle and No. 284 overall player in the nation, committed to the Gators Friday morning.

The Princeton, New Jersey native chose Florida over Rutgers and moved the Gators’ 2017 class up from No. 13 to No. 10 in the country — the Seminoles sat idly by at No. 12.

A day later, defensive backs coach Torrian Gray picked up another weapon to work with when 3-star recruit Shawn Davis committed to Florida.

Ranked as the No. 34 cornerback in the nation and the No. 6-ranked cornerback in the Sunshine State, Davis became the third defensive back to pledge to the Gators in 2017. He joins 4-star cornerback Elijah Blades and 4-star cornerback Marco Wilson, the younger brother of current Gator Quincy Wilson.

Davis’ decision moved Florida ahead of Clemson for the No. 9 spot in the class rankings, as the Gators now sit with 2,443 recruiting points.
