Louisville vs. Pitt Game Preview
Date: Thursday, Jan. 14
Game Time: 9:00 p.m. ET
Venue: KFC Yum! Center, Louisville, Ky.
Why You Need To Care
We have some ACC action coming your way, and it rarely disappoints. The No. 20 Pitt Panthers are 14-1 and 3-0 in conference play. Pitt’s only loss this season came against Purdue, 72-59, on Dec. 1.
Since then, head coach Jamie Dixon’s Panthers have toppled their opponents, having won 10 straight games.
After taking down Syracuse, Georgia Tech and Notre Dame, Pitt will now head to Louisville, Ky. to take on the No. 21-ranked Cardinals in its fourth ACC matchup of the season..
Louisville comes into this one at 13-3, having won two of its three conference matchups.
The Cardinals have lost two of their last four games, though. Kentucky and John Calipari got the best of Louisville and Rick Pitino, 75-73. Then Clemson took down the Cardinals, 66-62, on Sunday.
Why Louisville Will Win
First thing’s first, if the Cardinals are going to pick up their third ACC win, Damion Lee has to shoot better than the 2-of-12 performance he put up against Clemson. Lee was horrific from three, going 0-of-7 behind the arc. He’ll need to be efficient with the long ball against Pitt. Aside from that Louisville has to keep the Panthers off the free throw line, as they shoot the highest percentage from the charity stripe in all of college basketball (79.3 percent). Add in a double-double performance from Chinanu Onuaku, and Louisville will be sitting pretty.
Why Pitt Will Win
Michael Young and Jamel Artis combined for 44 points on 14-of-26 shooting from the field against Notre Dame. Artis was especially dangerous from three, as he knocked down 5-of-9 triples on the Fighting Irish. If Artis can space the floor against Louisville, that’ll create more opportunities for Young near the basket. Pitt needs to keep a hand in Lee’s face at all times and hold the Cardinals off the offensive boards — specifically Onuaku.
What’s Going To Happen?
Artis has been shooting the ball really well the past couple of games, and that will continue against Louisville. He and Young will each hit double figures. The entire team will do a solid job of keeping Onuaku off the offensive glass by boxing out and snagging the ball above the rim. Lee will shoot better this time around, but he won’t knock down enough threes to separate Louisville from Pitt. Onuaku will flirt with a double-double but fall just short, as the Panthers steal one on the road.
