Notre Dame quarterbacks Malik Zaire and DeShone Kizer will both get playing time against Texas, but who will start?
Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly has decided that both Malik Zaire and DeShone Kizer will see time at quarterback in the season opener in Austin against Texas. The two can’t start the game, though, so which one will get the first chance at leading the Fighting Irish offense to a score?
“In my opinion, I think they start Kizer first because of the fact that he is a much better pocket passer,” Notre Dame football insider Allen Pinkett told Campus Insiders. “I think they can open up the field with Kizer.”
Pinkett also said Kizer brings a surprise factor against the Longhorns defense, as they have never faced him.
“The other thing is that Texas hasn’t seen Kizer live and in person,” Pinkett said. “They’ve seen Zaire. So I think you can bring in Zaire as your changeup, put them on their heels a little bit.”
Zaire led Notre Dame to a 38-3 shellacking of Texas in South Bend last season, passing for 313 yards and three touchdowns. After suffering a season-ending injury the following week against Virginia, Kizer stepped in under center. While neither quarterback has distanced himself this fall, Pinkett said there is one facet of Kizer’s game that stands out.
“To me, Kizer looks like the more confident quarterback sitting in the pocket,” Pinkett said.
