Why You Need To Care
Is there anything sweeter than the taste of revenge? If you ask Tom Izzo and his Spartans, they’d probably tell you there’s nothing as appealing.
No. 4 Michigan State (16-1, Big Ten 3-1) is back home in the Breslin Center after picking up its third Big Ten win of the season against Penn State, 92-65.
It was about two weeks ago that the Spartans took their first loss of the season after falling to Iowa, 83-70.
Now, the No. 16-ranked Hawkeyes (12-3, Big Ten 3-0) are getting their chance to sweep the season series with Michigan State. Iowa has won five straight games and is coming off a 77-66 win over Nebraska.
Why Michigan State Will Win
The last time they met the Hawkeyes, the Spartans were without Denzel Valentine. Now that they’re star player is back, expect him to add a little more diversity to the offense. Valentine has been easing his way back. He had 10 points against Penn State on 4-of-11 shooting. He’ll need Bryn Forbes to provide some sharp shooting to help create some room to operate. Forbes dropped 20 on the Nittany Lions, and the two of them together can have a big impact in this one.
Why Iowa Will Win
Michigan State is the best rebounding team in the nation, so the Hawkeyes will have to concentrate on boxing out. Iowa was out rebounded, 38-27, in the last meeting, but it can’t count on the Spartans going 3-of-13 from three again. Second-chance opportunities could come back to haunt Iowa. Jarrod Uthoff will have to set the tone offensively and do his part on the boards. If he gets help from Mike Gesell, the Hawkeyes will be in a good position to win.
What’s Going To Happen?
Michigan State smells blood, and it’ll get the revenge it’s seeking. Valentine will start to feel a little bit more like himself and hit double figures again. Forbes will still lead the Spartans in scoring, but they’ll both get what they want on offense. Uthoff also won’t be stopped, but the Spartans will control the glass and limit the Hawkeyes’ second-chance looks. Michigan State wins a close one.
