The three rowing programs from Navy’s Hubbard Hall will be well represented this Saturday with 20 entries in the 2015 Navy Day Regatta. Hosted by St. Joseph’s University and held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, the Mids will have its heavyweight, lightweight and women’s team competing in nine different events during the day. The men’s collegiate four race at 10:07 a.m. begins the day for Navy with one heavyweight boat racing. The final event for the trio of Navy teams is the men’s collegiate freshmen four and that competition gets going at 2:10 p.m.
“We are excited to race this weekend in Philadelphia,” remarked heavyweight head coach Rob Friedrich. “It’s always a great event and a good test for the Head of the Charles. We are missing a few athletes due to our SEAL screener on campus, but this will give some of our other athletes a chance to compete.”
While both the heavyweight and lightweight teams got on the water in competitive action two weeks ago at the Head of the Potomac event, Saturday marks the 2015-16 debut for the women’s team and first-year head coach Joe Schlosberg.
“We have been hard at work practicing on the Severn, but now we are very excited to finally get out and race and see where we are in our development,” said Schlosberg.
This annual event, that began in 1986 as a way to promote and support the U.S. Navy’s birthday (Oct. 13, 1775), has seen Midshipmen crews perform well year-in and year-out. At the 2014 regatta, the three Navy programs combined to finish in first place in four of the nine races that they entered. The heavyweights earned victories in the open eight and freshmen four events, while the women posted wins in varsity eight and junior varsity eight competitions. Of note in the heavyweight open eight race, Navy and Penn finished the three-mile course in a dead heat with a time of 12:11.81.
This year’s Navy Day Regatta is scheduled to have over 700 entries from 105 colleges, high schools and clubs.
