KINSTON, N.C. – An 11-3 victory over Coppin State helped Army salvage a split of Saturday’s doubleheader after the Eagles took the first game, 4-3, at Grainger Stadium.
Army won three of its four games on the weekend after sweeping Mount St. Mary’s on Friday and moved to 6-4 on the season. Coppin State dips to 1-5 in 2015.
The Black Knights posted a double-digit total for the fourth time this season with nine hits and took advantage of six Coppin State errors. Army scored in all but three innings, including two runs in the first, fourth and fifth frames and four runs in the eighth. Mark McCants delivered the knockout blow with a three-run homer in the eighth inning. The blast cleared the right field wall and was McCants’ second of the season.
Ryan Levenhagen and Jacob Page each added two hits and scored twice in support of Patrick Gardner’s second win of the season. Gardner pitched five innings and gave up three runs on eight hits and punched out three. Garrison Franklin tossed a scoreless sixth, prior to Johnny Griffith throwing two innings of one-hit relief. Matt Ball came on and threw a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to end the game.
