Cichosz, Puddy Combine For 33 Kills In Win Over South Carolina State

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Molly Cichosz and Haley Puddy combined to hit .391 and record 33 kills Saturday afternoon as the Loyola University Maryland volleyball team closed the HPU Classic sponsored by Hampton Inn with a 26-24, 25-16, 29-31, 25-18, victory over South Carolina State.

Cichosz posted eight of her 18 kills in the deciding fourth set, while Puddy posted 14 of her 15 in the first three. As a team, Loyola hit .243 with 52 kills and also had eight blocks and 57 digs on the defensive side of the net.

The Greyhounds (2-5) also served a season-high 10 aces led by Puddy’s three and two each from Micah Duzey, Anna Eckstein and Elena Scarano.

The Bulldogs (0-3) scored the first two points of the fourth set on kills by Kiana Stone and Brianna Dafney, but Loyola sided out on a South Carolina State service error, and the Greyhounds then scored six-straight points behind the serve of Stacey Kazalas.

Kazalas had an ace in the stretch, while Cichosz posted two kills, had a solo block and teamed with Danielle Hillman for another stuff.

The Bulldogs narrowed the gap to two, 12-10, later in the set on a Kirby Anderson ace, but Puddy was credited with a solo block on Dafney and then served an ace. Loyola led by at least three the rest of the set

Molly Werts, who was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Greyhounds, directed the Greyhounds offense with 37 assists. She also had 11 digs and was in on a block.

Duzey led all players with 17 digs, and Kazalas had 10 to go with nine kills.

Loyola returns to Retiz Arena on Tuesday night to host Saint Francis (Pennsylvania) University in a 7 p.m. match.
