Dayton beats VCU in OT; clinches Atlantic 10 No. 1 seed

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) Kyle Davis scored the game-winning layup with 16 seconds left in overtime, and Dayton beat VCU 68-67 Saturday night to clinch a share of the Atlantic 10 title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.

Davis forced a turnover and was fouled after giving the Flyers the lead, but missed a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to give VCU (22-9, 14-4) another shot to win the conference title outright. But after getting the ball to midcourt, the Rams called a timeout with 1.1 seconds left and then Melvin Johnson missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Scoochie Smith scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Flyers (24-6, 14-4).

Johnson and Korey Billbury scored 16 points apiece for VCU. Justin Tillman added 12 points and a career-high 21 rebounds.

Smith’s layup tied it at 55 with 11 seconds left in regulation. Johnson missed a fade-away jumper and Doug Brooks the tip-in to force overtime.

The Rams shot just 14 of 27 from the line.
