Fairfield beats Saint Peter’s 64-55

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Marcus Gilbert scored 20 points as fifth-seeded Fairfield beat No.4 seed Saint Peter’s 64-55 in the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal on Saturday night.

Tyler Nelson added 15 points and Matija Milin had 10 for the Stags (19-12) who advance to play No. 1 Monmouth in the tournament semifinals on Sunday.

Gilbert made four 3-pointers and a dunk in the first half to help the Stags to a 35-27 edge at halftime.

A Kevin Degnan layup stretched it to 50-34 with 14:13 to play in the second half but the Stags went cold after that, allowing Saint Peter’s to cut the lead to five points, 54-49, with 4:44 remaining. Gilbert sank his fifth 3-pointer with 31 seconds left and Milin dunked at the buzzer – after a Gilbert assist – to seal the win for the Stags.

Quadir Welton scored 16 points with 10 rebounds for the Peacocks (14-16).
