CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Eight Patriot League football student-athletes earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District Team on Thursday, with a pair of players selected from four different schools.

Holy Cross, Fordham and Colgate each had two selections in District 1, which includes student-athletes from schools in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. Bucknell had a pair of honorees in District 2, which features schools from Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

In District 1, sophomore wide receiver Jake Wieczorek and senior defensive back Sam Jones made the team from Holy Cross, senior tight end Dan Light and graduate student defensive lineman Brett Biestek were honored from Fordham and sophomore placekicker Jonah Bowman and junior defensive lineman Ben Anderson were selected from Colgate. Bucknell’s selections in District 2 were junior running back Matt DelMauro and senior placekicker Derek Maurer. Jones makes the list for the third year in a row, while Biestek becomes a two-time honoree.

Light maintains a 3.36 GPA as a Business Administration major, while Biestek is getting his MBA and has a 3.83 cumulative GPA.

Bowman has been very impressive for Colgate by converting 11-of-12 field goals, while Anderson has 11 tackles and a sack. Andersen has a 3.67 grade-point average as an Economics major, and Bowman carries a 3.59 GPA while his major is undecided.

DelMauro and Maurer have helped lead Bucknell to a 7-1 record and 3-0 Patriot League mark. DelMauro has run for 318 yards and three touchdowns, while Maurer has connected on 6-of-8 field-goal attempts and hit a game-winner in overtime to beat Lafayette last week. DelMauro maintains a 3.72 GPA as an Accounting & Financial Management major at Bucknell, with Maurer holding a 3.91 mark while majoring in Managing for Sustainability.

Each of the Academic All-District honorees now moves on to the national ballot where first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
