Football. Football Announces 2016 Schedule

March 31, 2016

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team has announced its 11-game schedule for the 2016 season, the third season under Head Coach Rob Sgarlata. The Hoyas will open its schedule when they host Davidson on Saturday, September 3 at Cooper Field, one of the team’s six home games.

“As always, our Patriot League opponents will present us with a great challenge,” Sgarlata said. “From top to bottom the entire league is playing at a very high level, highlighted by two teams making the playoffs last season. We continue to challenge ourselves with our non-conference schedule, and will play three Ivy League opponents for the second straight year. We are all excited for the 2016 and I am looking forward to seeing how we meet the challenge.”

PATRIOT LEAGUE GAMES AT COOPER FIELD: The 2016 season will be Georgetown’s 16th in the Patriot League, as it begins league play at home on October 15 against Lehigh for Family Weekend on the Hilltop. The Blue & Gray will also host Holy Cross (Nov. 5) and Bucknell (Nov. 12) on Senior Day.

PATRIOT LEAGUE GAMES ON THE ROAD: GU will travel to the Bronx to take on Fordham (Oct. 22) in the 61st meeting between the two programs. The matchup is the Hoyas’ longest-running rivalry. The Blue & Gray will travel to Easton, Pa. the following weekend to take on Lafayette (Oct. 29) at Fisher Stadium, where GU has won two of its last three trips. They will play the season finale in Hamilton, N.Y. on November 19 when they meet defending Patriot League Champion Colgate.

NON-CONFERENCE GAMES: Georgetown’s season opener with Davidson will be the 12th meeting between the programs, with the Hoyas leading the series, 8-3. GU travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for its second game of the season to take on Marist (Sept. 10). The game will be the 19th meeting in series history, with Georgetown holding a 14-4 advantage over the Red Foxes.

VS. THE IVY LEAGUE: They begin their three-game Ivy League slate when they host Columbia (Sept. 24) on Homecoming Weekend for the “Battle for the Lou Little Trophy”. GU defeated the Lions, 24-16, last season in the first game of a 10-year series. Georgetown will travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Harvard for the second consecutive season. The game will be played under the lights at Harvard Stadium on Friday, September 30. GU will host Princeton at Cooper Field on Saturday, October 8.
