EASTON, Pa. – Navy’s offensive 1-2 punch of senior Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) and junior Katie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) generated 13 points on nine goals and four assists to help the Navy women’s lacrosse team (7-1, 1-0 Patriot League) defeat Lafayette (1-6, 0-1 PL), 20-5, Saturday afternoon at Fisher Stadium. Navy improved to 8-0 all-time in league openers.
Navy saw nine different players register a goal with Gallagher scoring a career-best five goals. Generi tallied a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists along with eight draw controls and three ground balls.
“Both Loren [Generi] and Katie [Gallagher] work extremely hard in practice each and every day and to see their hard work paid off is great to see,” Navy head coach Cindy Timchal said. “Overall, we had a very balanced attack and to see production off the bench was very promising.”
Navy jumped out to an early 3-1 lead with 19:34 left in the half. Gallagher sparked the early offense, scoring two of Navy’s first three goals. The junior attack’s first goal extended her consecutive games with at least one point to 25 straight games.
Lafayette bounced back with two of the next four goals to keep the contest within two, 5-3, with 8:37 left in the half. Kristen Wilhelmsen helped pace the Leopard’s offense, scoring her second goal of the game during the run.
The Mids then put the game out of reach, scoring the next 11 goals in a span of 20:07 to extend their lead to 13, 16-3, with 16:26 left in the game. Gallagher, Generi, sophomore Aislinn Probst and freshman Julia Collins all recorded multiple goals to help Navy garner its first league win of the season.
Navy overwhelmed Lafayette in shots, 35-15 and draw controls, 20-7. Both teams were even in ground balls at 18.
Navy goalkeeper Annie Foky (Charlottesville, Va.) had a strong performance in net, recording six saves on 11 chances to improve to 7-1 in net. Freshman Ingrid Boyum relieved Foky for the final 7:56, while the game was out of reach, and tallied two saves on two shots. Lafayette netminder Anna Raymond made seven saves on 27 opportunities in the loss.
Navy looks to extend its winning streak to six games against Bucknell on Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Opening draw is set for 11:30 a.m. and can be seen live for free on PatriotLeague. TV.
