BETHLEHEM, PA – Led by a fourth place finish from Tom Girardot, the Army men’s cross country team claimed a third place finish at the Patriot League Championships, hosted by Lehigh University.
Girardot crossed the line first for the Black Knights, taking fourth overall with a time of 24:09.10.
“Our men came out today and ran with the kind of effort and determination that you would expect from an Army team,” head coach Mike Smith said. “They put themselves in the hunt and never backed down from the challenge. I am proud of all of them.
“Tom Girardot in particular has really come of age. He is a tenacious competitor and showed the kind of grit today that will give him a chance to run near the front of our regional meet in two weeks.”
Matt Bearden’s time of 25:00.00 was good for 31st place. He was followed by Drew Beck who finished as Army’s No. 5 runner in 35th place with a time of 25:07.10.
Also competing for the Black Knights were Alex Duffy and Ryan Smathers, who took 40th and 41st, respectively. Brown Bailey claimed 50th place, followed by Andreas Kellas in 52nd, Mitch Dutton in 54th, Johny Valeri in 60th and Nick Causey in 76th.
“All of our guys were significantly better here today than they were a month ago and that is all we can ask of them,” added Smith. “We have more work to do if we want to reach our goals, so we will continue to push forward and set the bar high. Today we were as good as we could be, the two teams ahead of us outperformed us. We can only control what we do and today we ran better than we have all year. In many cases, we had guys run the best race of their lives.”
The Black Knights will now turn their attention to NCAA Regionals held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. on Saturday, Nov. 14.
