NEW YORK – Three Loyola University Maryland student-athletes were named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch Lists as contenders for the honor given to the top player in men’s and women’s lacrosse. Zach Herreweyers and Brian Sherlock represent the men’s program, while Maddy Lesher is a member of the women’s watch list.
Herreweyers, the Preseason Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, has scored five goals and has an assist in the Greyhounds’ first two games, wins over top-10 foes University of Virginia and Johns Hopkins University.
He was named the Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after scoring three goals and assisting on another Saturday versus the Blue Jays. Both of his second-half goals came at key junctures and gave Loyola a two-goal cushion after Johns Hopkins had pulled within one.
He returns to the Greyhounds offensive unit this year after leading all Patriot League players with 47 goals in 2015. The native of London, Ontario, was seventh in NCAA Division I with 3.13 goals per game, a number that also paced the Patriot League. Throughout his career, he has recorded hat tricks in 15 of his 28 career games, giving him three or more goals in more than half of his outings for the Greyhounds.
Sherlock has tallied six points through the first two games, scoring twice in the opener against the Cavaliers and once on Saturday against Johns Hopkins. He also had two assists versus Virginia and a single helper in the most recent contest.
A member of this year’s Preseason All-Patriot League Team along with Herreweyers, Sherlock has earned All-Patriot League First Team honors after his freshman and sophomore seasons, and he garnered United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America Honorable Mention following the 2015 campaign. The Long Islander was the top goal-scoring midfielder in the Patriot League, registering 29 to go with 19 assists for 48 points last year.
Lesher, a two-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, is making her second-straight appearance on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List and is one of eight defenders to be honored. The 2016 Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Lesher was also named to the ILWomen Preseason All-American First Team after picking up her second-straight IWLCA All-America honor last season.
The mark-up defender from Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, led the Greyhounds’ field players with 46 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers in 2015. She also helped Loyola’s defense rank 15th in the NCAA with an 8.09 goals-against average, as the unit limited 14-straight opponents to nine goals or less, including seven to six goals or less.
The Tewaaraton Awards, which are presented by Under Armour, are given to the top male and female lacrosse players in early June.
