April 12, 2015

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women’s tennis team (18-6, 4-0 PL) closed out its regular season with a 6-1 win over Bucknell (6-11, 2-2 PL) at the USNA Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon on Senior Day. Navy will enter the Patriot League Tournament (April 23-26) on a 10-match winning streak.

Navy’s team captain, Noelle Kaufmann, won at both singles and doubles on Senior Day to highlight Navy’s last home match of the 2015 season. Kaufmann is Navy’s lone senior.

Kaufmann teamed with freshman Kristine Rojo to post an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Maria Cioffi and Stephanie Pino. Kaufmann also earned a 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 victory over Jorie Fox at No. 6 singles.

Kaufmann moves into fifth place on Navy’s career combined wins list with 93. She has 40 career singles wins and 53 career doubles wins. Her 53 doubles wins rank as the fourth most in school history.

In addition to Kaufmann and Rojo’s win at No. 1 doubles, freshman Amanda Keller and sophomore Summer Ralston won at No. 2 doubles and junior Mikaela Carlson and sophomore Rozel Hernandez won at No. 3 doubles as Navy swept the doubles point.

Keller was the first Mid to win a singles match, as she breezed past Melissa Parks at the No. 5 slot, 6-0, 6-1. Keller extends her team-best record to 28-8 and she won her 13th dual win of the season.

Junior Katie Porter defeated Michele Urbinati at No. 3 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 and then Rojo defeated Madeline Melch at the No. 4 position, 6-1, 6-3.

Junior Logan Antill won a straight set singles match at the No. 2 position over Pino, 6-4, 6-2.

Navy has won eight straight matches against Bucknell.

Navy will be off until the 2015 Patriot League Tournament, which will be hosted by Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. from April 23 to April 26. Navy’s first match will be in the quarterfinal round on Friday, April 24, with the semifinals and championship following over the next two days.

“The coaching staff is very pleased with the direction we are moving in as a team,” said head coach Keith Puryear. “Bucknell is always a very tough team. Our effort was great today, and for the most part, our execution was very good. We will now take the next few weeks to prepare for the Patriot League Tournament.”
