Lafayette Defeats Lehigh, Retains President’s Cup

Oct. 15, 2015

GLADSTONE, N.J. – Lafayette’s golf team earned another dramatic victory over Lehigh at renowned Hamilton Farm Golf Club to retain the President’s Cup, defeating the arch rivals by a score of 9 points to 7 points. Sophomores Art Grffin and James Frahm won the final two singles matches to seal the Leopards’ victory.

The day-long event featured a Ryder Cup-style format. Play began in the morning on the 7,140-yard, par-72 Highlands Course with three better ball nine-hole doubles matches. Lafayette claimed an early 3-1 lead in the morning matches. The second nine holes in the morning featured doubles play with an alternate shot format. Lehigh held the upper hand in the four alternate shot matches to even the points at 4-4 after the morning matches.

The afternoon session featured eight singles matches on the Hickory Course, the only 18-hole, USGA-rated par-three course in the country. The two teams split the first six singles matches, setting up the dramatic finish in the final two matches.

This was the fifth annual President’s Cup match. Lafayette leads Lehigh in the series, 3-2, with the Leopards winning the cup in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

The Leopards next compete in the Lehigh Fall Invitational Oct. 15-17 on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
