Luke Gillingham Named Louisville Slugger Second Team All-American

June 2, 2016

TUCSON, Ariz. – On the eve of the NCAA Tournament, it was announced on Thursday that Navy left-handed pitcher Luke Gillingham had been selected as a 2016 Louisville Slugger Second-Team All-American. Just the second two-time All-American in program history, the senior repeated his 2015 honor with another stellar season that had him amongst the nation’s best players.

An All-American on the Louisville Slugger and NCBWA teams last year, Gillingham has posted an 8-3 record with a 1.96 ERA over 13 appearances and 87.1 innings in 2016. The southpaw was selected as the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year and was a unanimous selection on the All-Patriot League First Team. After a fast start to his 2016 campaign, Gillingham was named to both the Golden Spikes Award and National Pitcher of the Year Watch Lists. The leader of the Mids’ rotation, he’s shown a bulldog mentality with eight complete games that ranks number one in the nation. He’s also top-25 nationally in WHIP (16th, 0.94), ERA (21st) and hits allowed per nine innings (23rd, 6.18).

On the Louisville Slugger Second Team, Gillingham is one of four LHPs on the list with Kent State’s Eli Kraus, Rhode Island’s Tyler Wilson and UConn’s Anthony Kay. Gillingham’s ERA is third lowest on the second team and seventh overall amongst starting pitchers on the three teams that were named.

Kent State’s left-handed pitcher Eric Lauer was selected as the National Player of the Year.

In the 121 years of Navy baseball only 11 prior times had a Midshipman been named to an All-American team. Prior to Gillingham and Sean Trent earning All-American accolades in 2015, Mitch Harris (Class of ’08) was the last Navy player to each such a national accolade. In 2007, Harris was named to Baseball America’s third team as a utility player. Chuck Davis in 1961 and Drew Tanner in 1986 are the only two Midshipmen to ever reach the status of Second-Team All-American prior to Gillingham last season.

The Navy baseball team will be in action at the NCAA Baseball Championship Tournament on Friday at the Raleigh Regional. The Mids are the four-seed in the regional and will start play at 7 p.m. versus the host Wolfpack of North Carolina State. Coastal Carolina and Saint Mary’s are the respective two and three seeds in the Raleigh Regional.
