WEST POINT, N.Y. – Fresh off a series victory against Lehigh to start Patriot League Play, Army baseball senior Mark McCants has been named the Corvais Patriot League Player of the Week. McCants batted .500 over five games last week as Army went 3-2 against Lehigh and Columbia.
McCants earns his second Patriot League Player of the Week award this season after he collected the honor on March 9.
A native of Flower Mound, Texas, McCants started the week with a two-hit performance in Army’s midweek contest at Columbia. He hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot, in the top of the second inning that put the Black Knights on the board.
McCants opened Patriot League play with a 5-for-5 effort in Army’s doubleheader sweep of Lehigh on Saturday afternoon. He doubled, drove in two runs, walked once and stole three bases in three attempts. In Sunday’s series finale, McCants recorded his first triple of the season that drove in a run as part of Army’s four-run ninth inning that provided insurance for the victory. Overall, McCants was 8-for-16 at the plate with two runs scored, a double, triple, home run and four RBI.
The Engineering Management major is Army’s leading hitter in 2015 with a .372 batting average. His three home runs and 24 RBI both lead the team.
Army returns to the diamond on Tuesday when it takes on Siena in Loudonville, N.Y. First pitch against the Saints is scheduled for 3 p.m.
