LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Behind a double-double from Maya Hood and a near double-double from Katelyn McDaniel, the University of San Diego women’s basketball team picked up a 51-42 win over Santa Clara University Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal game of the West Coast Conference Tournament at the Orleans Arena. With the win, the Toreros improve to 24-5 overall, have won their fourth game in a row and have now won nine of their last 10 games. USD will advance on to the semifinals on Monday, when they take on the sixth-seeded University of San Francisco in a 2 p.m. game. With the loss, the Broncos finish the season with an 11-18 overall record.

Hood recorded a double-double with 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and she pulled down 10 rebounds. Sophia Ederaine set the new USD single-season blocks record with her three blocks this afternoon, and she now has 138 on the season.

For the Broncos, Nici Gilday led the way with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the field, while both Gilday and Taylor Berry led the team with six rebounds apiece.

In the first half, SCU grabbed the early momentum, as they raced out to a 5-1 lead over the first three minutes of action. Then a McDaniel jumper in the paint sparked a 6-0 Torero run to tie things up at 7-all with 14:51 to go.

After the Broncos grabbed the next four points, USD used an 11-1 run to take back the momentum and grab an 18-11 lead with 5:57 to go. USD would go on to build up their lead to as many as 11 on a few different occasions, before the Broncos cut the deficit to nine at the break.

In the second half, USD quickly pushed its lead to 14 with a 5-0 run, and San Diego was in complete control for the remainder of the half. The Broncos did manage to make things interesting late when they cut the lead to eight at 49-41 with 1:22 to go, but USD was just too much to overcome, as they cruised their way to a 51-42 win.
