ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men’s cross country team will look to defend its Patriot League title this weekend at the conference championships in Bethlehem, Pa. Saturday’s race will take place at Lehigh’s Goodman’s Cross Country Course at 12 p.m.
The top finisher in the race earns the Runner of the Year Award, with the highest-finishing freshman deemed the Rookie of the Year. There will also be a Coach of the Year voted on by head coaches after the race. The top-seven finishers in meet earn first-team All-Patriot League status, and the next seven are second-team All-Patriot League finishers.
As the preseason favorite, Navy has lived up to its billing during the 2014 campaign. The Mids have won every competition they entered, with three invitational victories and a pair of dual wins that included a victory over rival Army on Oct. 18.
Navy and Lehigh have alternated close victories in the last two races, with the Mids beating the Mountain Hawks by two points and American by five points last season after Lehigh defeated Navy by two points in 2012, when American was also third. Navy has won five of the last six men’s titles overall.
Navy jumped up one spot to number five in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region Poll. The Mids ranking is the highest amongst Patriot League schools, as Lehigh and Bucknell sit seventh and eighth, respectively, and American is placed tenth.
Navy will then race at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Friday, Nov. 14. The meet is held in University Park, Pennsylvania, hosted by Penn State, at 12 p.m.
