Men’s Cross Country Wins Second-Straight Patriot League Championship

Nov. 1, 2014

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Navy men’s cross country team defended its Patriot League title, placing all five of its scoring runners in the top 10 to win the 2014 Patriot League Championship on Saturday at Lehigh’s Goodman Cross Country Course. Junior Steve Schroeder (Monticello, Ill.) earned the league’s Runner of the Meet with a first-place finish of 23:57.00.

“Last year’s Patriot League championship took two hours to determine the winner, but not this year,” Navy head coach Al Cantello said.

Cantello, the 2014 Patriot League Coach of the Year, watched his runners perform at their highest level to defend the league title for the second-straight year. Behind Schroeder’s first-place finish, junior Sam Peckham (Valencia, Calif.) and senior captain John Sweeney (Euclid, Ohio) placed fifth and seventh, respectively, with finishes of 24:11.20 and 24:12.30. Schroeder, Peckham and Sweeney all garnered First Team All-Patriot League laurels.

Sophomore Lucas Stalnaker (Tega Cay, S.C.) and senior Zach Hebda (Pittsburgh, Pa.) both crossed the finish line at 24:13.10, but Stalnaker was given the nod for eighth and Hebda for ninth place to round out Navy’s five scoring runners. Senior Kyle Davis (North Brunswick, N.J.) and sophomore Hal Bullen (Annapolis, Md.) placed 10th and 14th to garner Second Team All-Patriot League honors.

Navy topped the field of 10 with 30 points. Following Navy, Bucknell was a close second with 76 and Army right behind with 92. Boston University and American rounded out the top five teams with 97 and 111 points, respectively.

Navy will look ahead to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Friday, Nov. 14. The meet is held in University Park, Pennsylvania, hosted by Penn State, at 12 p.m.
