Mids Open Patriot League Play With a 5-2 Win at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Navy women’s tennis team (15-6, 1-0 PL) opened Patriot League play with a 5-2 win over Lehigh (6-6, 0-1 PL) on Sunday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Navy has won seven straight dual matches.

Lehigh won very close doubles matches at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to take an early lead by securing the doubles points. Navy senior Noelle Kaufmann and junior Katie Porter teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles over Cassidy Cruz and Abby Farrell.

The Mids were then able to win five of six singles match to pick up the 5-2 team win.

Porter picked up a straight set win at No. 2 singles over Cruz, 6-2, 6-4 and freshman Kristine Rojo defeated Jamie Campisi at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-3.

Freshman Amanda Keller beat Briana Maravich at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Keller improved her overall singles record to 25-8 and she has tied junior Logan Antill’s record for most singles wins in a season at 25.

Freshman Claudia Mackenzie won her eighth straight singles match by posting a 6-4, 6-0 win over Kirstin Godau at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Summer Ralston defeated Farrell at No. 6 singles in a three-set tiebreak, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-3).

“Lehigh is a much improved team and we tried to relay that to our players,” said head coach Keith Puryear. “They fought us very hard and I was very pleased to come out with a hard-fought win. We responded pretty well after dropping a tight doubles point. We did a good job of coming out in singles and winning the first set in four of the six singles matches to set the tone.”

Navy improves to 6-0 all-time against the Mountain Hawks.

Navy will next play at Army in the annual Star Match on Saturday, April 4 at 10:00 AM.
