Moore, Leftwich step up at wide receiver for Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) J’Mon Moore caught five passes for a team-best 105 yards, including a 65-yard reception from backup quarterback Eddie Printz, in Missouri’s first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday.

The Tigers, two-time defending champions in the SEC East, are trying to identify reliable wide receivers. The three top targets last year, Jimmie Hunt, Bud Sasser and Darius White, combined for 147 catches but all three have exhausted eligibility.

”We’ve got some talented guys,” coach Gary Pinkel said. ”We’ve got to find the guys who are ready to play. Analyzing that is going to be real important.”

Senior Wesley Leftwich made an acrobatic 35-yard touchdown catch over starting cornerback Kenya Dennis, one of his two catches on the day.

”Wesley’s looking good,” quarterback Maty Mauk said. ”If you looked at him in the spring, I don’t even think (Dennis) let him off the ball, and now Wesley’s starting to beat him, and they’re trading back.”

Freshman Emmanuel Hall had six catches for 63 yards and Johnathan Johnson had four catches for 90 yards, including a 64-yard reception during a two-minute drill. But Johnson injured an ankle on the play and was helped from the field. Nate Brown had four catches for 51 yards.

The starting offense had no turnovers and allowed one sack.

Senior kicker Andrew Baggett had a strained back and didn’t participate. Backup Nick Coffman missed two extra point attempts early, one off the left upright.

The defense totaled six sacks with 17 tackles for loss. Sophomore safety Thomas Wilson forced and recovered a fumble that he returned 46 yards. Linebacker Kentrell Brothers, who had 122 tackles last year, had eight tackles in the scrimmage.
