More Than 1,800 Student-Athletes Make Patriot League Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Patriot League teams combined to place 1,803 student-athletes on the Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll in 2015, bringing the total number of honorees to 2,744 for the 2014-15 season.

The Patriot League Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll included the following sports: baseball, men and women’s basketball, men and women’s golf, men and women’s lacrosse, women’s rowing, softball, men and women’s swimming and diving, men and women’s tennis and men and women’s track and field.

There were 1,054 women and 749 men named to the Patriot League Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll, marking an increase of 169 honorees over last year’s total. The strong numbers follow a fall season where Patriot League teams in seven sports (football, men and women’s soccer, men and women’s cross country, field hockey and volleyball) combined for a total of 941 student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll. The overall total of 2,744 Academic Honor Roll recipients for the whole 2014-15 season represents an increase of 271 from last year’s mark of 2,473.

All sports were well-represented in the winter and spring, led by 290 student-athletes earning Academic Honor Roll distinction in women’s track and field and 247 in men’s track and field. Women’s rowing also crossed the 200 mark with 222 honorees, while sports with more than 100 honorees included women’s swimming and diving (170), men’s lacrosse (162), women’s lacrosse (152) and men’s swimming and diving (111). The rest of the winter/spring sports included baseball (73), softball (70), women’s basketball (64), men’s tennis (64), women’s tennis (55), men’s basketball (54), men’s golf (38) and women’s golf (31). The list for the fall included football (212), women’s soccer (157), men’s cross country (133), women’s cross country (131), men’s soccer (127), field hockey (98) and volleyball (83).

Seventeen of the 22 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll lists featured an increase in student-athletes from last season, with 14 of those going up by double digits. The largest increases from last season were seen in football (+44), men’s lacrosse (+32) and women’s track and field (+30), while men’s cross country (+22), women’s swimming and diving (+21), women’s rowing (+20), men’s basketball (+19), men’s track and field (+16), men’s tennis (+15), women’s cross country (+15), baseball (+13), women’s lacrosse (+11), field hockey (+11) and women’s soccer (+10) also went up by double figures.

There were 147 student-athletes on the Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll with a semester grade-point average of 4.00 or higher, adding to the 70 who accomplished the feat on the Fall Academic Honor Roll.

To be eligible for the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the semester of his or her sport’s championship season.
