NCAA Championship Tournament Ahead for Navy Baseball
The Navy baseball team will continue its winningiest season in program history this weekend with action in the Raleigh Regional of the 2016 NCAA Baseball Championship Tournament … Hosted by number one seed, North Carolina State, the regional consists of second seed Coastal Carolina, third-seeded Saint Mary’s and Navy … Play begins on Friday at 7 p.m. for the Mids as they will go head-to-head with the Wolfpack … All games of the Raleigh Regional will be streamed by ESPN on the WatchESPN app or online at

Of the three teams in the regional, Navy has only ever played North Carolina State as the two programs met up in 1997 in Raleigh … All-time the Wolfpack lead the series that dates back to 1909, 6-4-1.

Seven All-Patriot League players lead the Midshipmen into the postseason with Pitcher of the Year Luke Gillingham and Rookie of the Year Noah Song headlining the pitching effort … C Adrian Chinnery, CF Robert Currie, RF Connor Deneen, DH Stephen Born and reliever Sam Sorenson all earned first team honors.

The Mids backed up their title as regular season champion with their first postseason title since 2011.

Navy will be looking to secure its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2002 when the Mids won 6-4 against George Washington in the Winston-Salem Regional … In terms of the Patriot League, Navy aims to earn the conference its first tournament win since 2014 when Bucknell defeated Liberty 5-2 in the Charlottesville Regional … The last time a Patriot League won two games in a regional was in 2009 when Army beat Texas State, 7-4 and Boston College, 4-3 before falling in the regional finals to the host Texas Longhorns, 14-10.

This weekend’s action will consist of games on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and if necessary Monday … The double elimination regional is slated to have two games on each of the first three days.

The Midshipmen are 4-16 all-time in the NCAA Championship tournament with an appearance in 2011 at the Charlottesville Regional as the program’s most recent trip … Navy’s last win came on June 1, 2002 versus George Washington as part of the Winston-Salem Regional … Navy defeated George Washington, 6-4

Watch Out Record Books
The 2016 Navy baseball team has its eye on a variety of single-season program marks at the 57-game mark … With a minimum of two games left in the season, the Mids’ 2016 squad currently ranks among the top-15 all-time in 12 categories … The team’s 42 victories and the pitching staff’s 12 shutouts are most all-time, while the school record for runs scored in a season (360, 1996) is in danger this weekend.

Class of 2016
Team captain CF Robert Currie leads a six-man senior class, that has won 130 games over its four seasons wearing the Blue & Gold. LF Sean Trent, RF Connor Deneen, SP Luke Gillingham, RP Andrew Bartek and RP Sam Sorenson make up the ‘16 class … They’re the winningiest class in Navy history as they surpassed the class of 2009, that won 119 games from 2006-09 … In back-to-back years they broke the record for wins in a season with 37 in 2015 and 42 in 2016

Senior Service Assignments
Five of the Mids’ seniors were commissioned as officers last Friday … Two were commissioned as a Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenants: Bartek and Sorenson (Marine Corps Ground), while the other three were commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy: Currie and Deneen (Navy Pilot) and Gillingham (Nuclear Surface Warfare). 

Though athletically classified as a senior, Trent is academically a sophomore at the Naval Academy after transferring in before the 2014-15 school year. 

Graduates of the Naval Academy serve a minimum of five years in the Navy or Marine Corps, while pilots serve eight years upon earning their wings.
