DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Touted Iowa State transfer Jameel McKay had to wait 665 days to play his first Division I game.
It took just 13 minutes to see why McKay might turn into an important player for the 13th-ranked Cyclones.
McKay had eight points and five rebounds in his debut with Iowa State, which rolled to an 83-54 victory over Drake on Saturday.
”He only played 13 minutes. But they were a very effective 13 minutes,” Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said.
Naz Long scored 13 points and Monte Morris had 12 for the Cyclones (9-1), who have won six in a row since a 72-63 loss to Maryland last month.
Iowa State pushed a 16-point halftime lead to as much as 35 in the second half. The Cyclones shot 12 of 23 from 3-point range and had 25 assists on 32 field goals.
Trevor Berkeley and Jacob Enevold each had 10 points for Drake (2-9).
McKay, a 6-foot-9 forward, starred at Indian Hills Community College (Iowa). He left Marquette less than a month before the 2013-14 season and transferred to Iowa State.
McKay entered his first game in 22 months with 13:34 left in the first half. He got his first Division I basket with 8:29 left, a tip-in that had his teammates leaping off the bench, waving towels and pumping their fists.
The Cyclones took the pressure off of McKay by dominating the overwhelmed Bulldogs.
Iowa State got buckets from nine different players in the first half and jumped to a 36-20 lead. Morris buried a 3 to make it 58-34 early in the second half, and McKay showed off his athleticism by stuffing home an alley-oop dunk from Bryce Dejean-Jones with 11 minutes left.
McKay’s bank shot gave Iowa State a 65-36 lead with 9:30 to go. He finished 4 of 7 from the floor.
”Yes, I was winded. You can’t really get ready for a game-type situation,” he said. ”Once I got my second wind, I was able to run a little faster up and down the court and get my shots.”
Iowa State: Fred Hoiberg is a win away from becoming the fifth coach in school history with 100 wins. Hoiberg’s college coach, Johnny Orr, won a record 218 games at Iowa State. … McKay’s last competitive game was on Feb. 23, 2013, collecting 21 points and 16 rebounds for Indian Hills in an 88-78 loss to Marshalltown Community College.
Drake: The Bulldogs are in their second season of what’s expected to be a long rebuilding effort under coach Ray Giacoletti. Drake has made the NCAA tournament just once in the last 43 years. ”We talked all week about having the effort to match their effort and be able to dictate things,” Giacoletti said. ”We have to do that first before we can talk about winning.”
Iowa State hosts Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 31.
Drake hosts Simpson College on Monday.
Drake went 0 of 8 on 3-pointers, got outrebounded 36-29 and committed 18 turnovers. Iowa State was just 7 of 15 from the free-throw line, but the Cyclones had 14 steals.
The Bulldogs were able to hang with the Cyclones early. But it didn’t last. Back-to-back 3s from Matt Thomas, who scored 10 points, and freshman Clayton Custer put Iowa State ahead 31-16. The Cyclones maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
