CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Three Patriot League men’s basketball teams posted victories on the opening night of the season on Friday, while four others were competitive against strong opponents.
Lafayette, Bucknell and Army all won their openers, as the Leopards won at Robert Morris 77-50, the Bison beat Marist 75-72 at home and the Black Knights advanced to the championship of the All-Military Classic at West Point with an 84-78 win over Air Force.
The other teams in action were all competitive against high-caliber teams, including a pair who took ranked foes down to the wire. Navy hung tough all the way before falling to No. 18 Michigan State 64-59 at home in the Quicken Loans Veterans Classic, while Lehigh led into the second half before eventually falling 77-66 to No. 12 Villanova at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa. American’s rally fell just short in a 40-37 loss at Temple, while Loyola Maryland fell 71-59 at Texas Tech as Greyhound head coach G.G. Smith faced his father, Tubby, on the other bench.

Saturday’s schedule includes two games with Colgate opening the season at La Salle at 3 p.m. while Army hosts the final of the All-Military Classic against VMI at 8 p.m. on Patriot League Network.

Patriot League Men’s Basketball Notes – Nov. 14
*Five players scored in double figures in Bucknell’s 75-72 win over Marist.
*Bucknell went on a 10-0 run to take a 64-58 lead with 3:05 left, and held off the Red Foxes down the stretch.
*Lafayette led 36-16 at halftime and scored the first 10 points of the second half on its way to the dominant 77-50 win at Robert Morris.
*Dan Trist led the Leopards with 21 points as Lafayette held Robert Morris to 13-of-52 from the field.
*Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Kyle Wilson led Army with 25 points while Tanner Plomb scored 22 in the 84-78 win over Air Force.
*Army shot 13-of-25 from three-point range and led by as many as 24 points in the second half before holding off Air Force down the stretch.
*Navy stayed close all night against Michigan State, as the Mids were within a possession in the final minute before falling 64-59.
*Lehigh led Villanova with 11 minutes to go and was within four with just over four minutes to play before falling 77-66 to the No. 12-ranked Wildcats.
*Austin Price led the way for Lehigh with a career-high 24 points, while Tim Kempton had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
*American used a 9-0 run to get within two points at Temple with 14 seconds left, but could not convert a tying three-pointer at the buzzer and fell despite holding the Owls to 11-of-48 from the field.
*Loyola led by as many as 11 points early at Texas Tech, but the Red Raiders pulled away in the second half for the 71-59 win.
*Freshman Andre Walker led the Greyhounds with 17 points.
