Sacred Heart’s defense leads 23-7 win over Wagner

NEW YORK (AP) Preston Sanford returned a blocked field goal 96 yards for touchdown in the third quarter to highlight Sacred Heart’s 23-7 win over Wagner on Saturday.

Sanford’s return gave Sacred Heart a 17-7 lead. Then, on its next possession, Wagner blocked a field goal but Pat Casey scooped it up and returned it 25 yards.

RJ Noel completed 13 of 28 passes for 114 yards and gained 33 yards on 14 attempts for Sacred Heart (7-2, 3-1 Northeast).

Otis Wright carried the ball 16 times for 98 yards and a scored on a 53-yard run to give Wagner (4-4, 2-1) a 7-0 lead.

Moses Webb scored on an 8-yard run just before halftime to give Sacred Heart a 10-7 lead at the break. Webb also caught five balls for 51 yards to lead the Pioneers.
