Softball. Softball Inks Four Early Signees for 2016 Season

BOSTON – Four student-athletes have signed Letters of Intent to join the Boston University softball team for the 2016 season, third-year head coach Kathryn Gleason announced. Alex Heinen, Madi Killebrew, Emily Morrow and Sam Sydenham make up the Class of 2019.

The group represents two different states and consists of three infielders and a catcher.

“I am excited to welcome these four young ladies to the BU Softball Family,” said Gleason. “They each play for highly competitive travel ball organizations that will prepare them for the next level. As a class, they will bring speed, power, enthusiasm, energy and versatility to our roster. They are not only tremendous athletes, but excellent students as well in the classroom. We expect them to make an immediate impact on our Terrier program.”

Alex Heinen

Alex Heinen (C • 5-7 • San Clemente, Calif. • Santa Margarita Catholic)
A four-year letterman at Santa Margarita Catholic … Will serve as team captain in the spring for the second consecutive season … Coming off a broken ankle her junior year, she batted .301 with 12 RBIs and two home runs in 2013 … Currently plays travel ball for Jeff Blanco’s Firecrackers.

Coach Gleason: “Alex brings a tremendous amount of energy, enthusiasm and leadership from behind the plate. Her communication and leadership skills help to make her pitchers and everyone around her better. Her power at the plate will also make an immediate impact in our offensive lineup.”

Madi Killebrew

Madi Killebrew (IF • 5-6 • Dana Point, Calif. • Dana Hills)
A four-year letterman at Dana Hills … Played with current BU freshman Diana Parker … Batted .438 with 22 RBIs and six homers as a junior … Earned All-League First Team and All-County Third Team accolades … Also earned All-League First Team honors as a sophomore after receiving second team recognition as a freshman … Currently plays travel ball for Jeff Blanco’s Firecrackers.

Coach Gleason: “Madi brings versatility to our infield. She has tremendous range and a strong arm that will have her challenge for any one of the infield positions. Her speed and power offensively will significantly add depth to our lineup.”


Emily Morrow

Emily Morrow (IF • 5-5 • Lakewood, Calif. • Valley Christian)
A four-year varsity letterman at Valley Christian … Batted a staggering .629 in 98 plate appearances as a sophomore, recording four triples and 21 RBIs … Received numerous awards, including Spring First Team All-Area Shortstop & Co-Player of the Year honors, All-Area Second Team and All-CIF SS Division 4 accolades … Helped lead squad to league title as a junior, earning All-league First Team honors … Also played volleyball … Currently plays travel ball for Phil Bruder’s Cal Raiders.

Coach Gleason: “Emily brings exceptional speed and power offensively, as well as versatility to the defensive lineup. She continues to work under Coach Bruder to truly become a three tool player at the plate. She has tremendous instincts on the base paths and at the plate, making her a tough out no matter where she will be in the lineup.”

Sam Sydenham

Sam Sydenham (IF • 5-9 • Scottsdale, Ariz. • Xavier College Prep)
A four-year letterman at Xavier College Preparatory … Batted .289 with 24 RBIs and seven homers as a junior team captain … Earned All-Arizona Academic Softball First Team honors … Two-time AIA Scholar-Athlete Award recipient … Batted .401 with 11 RBIs as a sophomore to earn Division I All-Section Second Team accolades … Helped lead team to the section title as a freshman … Currently plays travel ball for Stef Ewing’s Arizona Firecrackers.

Coach Gleason: “Sam will also bring versatility to the infield with her ability to play many positions with her strong arm and defensive range. Sam is a student of the game, under the tutelage of Coach Ewing, as she continually works to lead on the field, in the classroom and off the field.”
