Sumner, South Dakota State rout W. Illinois 59-24

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) Austin Sumner threw for 366 yards with a career-high six touchdowns and South Dakota State rolled past Western Illinois 59-24 on Saturday.

Jason Schneider hauled in two touchdown receptions from Sumner, the second making it 35-17 at half.

Zach Zenner rushed for 132 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns, including a 67-yard breakaway on the Jackrabbits’ first play from scrimmage. He also caught a 40-yard score from Sumner, his third touchdown of the first half.

Sumner and Jake Wieneke connected three times in the third quarter, helping South Dakota State (7-4, 4-3 Missouri Valley) push to a 56-24 lead. Wieneke had 10 receptions for 159 yards and Schneider had seven for 114. Wieneke’s 14 touchdown receptions this season is a new school record.

Trenton Norvell threw for 214 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. J.C. Baker had 97 yards rushing with a score for the Leathernecks (4-7, 2-5).
