W. Basketball. Patriot League Women’s Basketball Weekend Recap – 12.21.14

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Patriot League teams enjoyed a solid pre-holiday weekend with an impressive 8-3 record. Bucknell led the way with a pair of wins on Friday and Sunday.

The Bison emerged from the exam break with a 73-66 win over Yale and followed that up two days later with a 74-49 victory at Mount St. Mary’s. The weekend was nearly a 10-1 slate as Lafayette suffered a heartbreaking 60-58 loss at Stony Brook on Friday and Colgate fell to Kent State 62-61 on a buzzer-beater on Sunday.

The Leopards bounced back with a 66-50 win Sunday against NJIT. Like the Pards, Lehigh went 1-1 on the weekend splitting a pair of games in the ASU Classic. The Mountain Hawks suffered their first setback of the season 81-61 to the host Sun Devils on Saturday but defeated Eastern Illinois 72-69 the following day.

The rest of the weekend was a parade of wins for Patriot League teams as Loyola Maryland earned its second win of the season with a 59-49 win over Saint Peter’s on Saturday. Navy also defeated the Peacocks on Sunday by a 71-35 score. Army improved to 8-2 on the season with a 70-45 victory versus St. Thomas Aquinas and American defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore 64-52.

Full recaps and box scores from each game can be found at the Patriot League women’s basketball schedule. Only two games remain prior to the holidays, both on Monday. Holy Cross welcomes UMass-Lowell at 11 a.m. and Loyola entertains Cornell at 2 p.m.

Highlights from the weekend action are included below.

Patriot League Women’s Basketball Notes – Dec. 19-21

*Lafayette improved to 4-0 at the Kirby Sports Center this season with a 66-50 win Sunday versus NJIT.
*Navy ended the non-League portion of its schedule with a 71-35 win Sunday over St. Peter’s.
*American evened its record at 5-5 with a 64-52 road win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday.
*Army shot over 50 percent (51.9) for the second game in a row and for the fifth time this season in a win over St. Thomas Aquinas.
*Loyola used a 28-5 run in the second half to turn a 12-point deficit into an 110-point lead in a 59-49 win over St. Peter’s.
*Colgate went on a 13-0 run to erase a 12-point Kent state lead, but the Golden Flashes scored with 1.2 second remaining to steal a 62-61 win.
*Bucknell held Mount St. Mary’s to 28% shooting to win its third straight game of the season.
*Lehigh bounced back from its first loss of the season to knock off Eastern Illinois in the consolation game of the Arizona State Classic.
*Lafayette senior forward Emily Homan averaged 18.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in the Leopards 1-1 week.
*Sophomore guard Sarita Condie set career highs in points (14) and rebounds (6) in Navy’s 71-35 win over St. Peter’s.
*Junior guard Ari Booth scored a career-high 13 points to lead the American University women’s basketball team to a 64-52 road win over UMES.
*Army junior guard Jean Parker has made 12-of-14 3-point field goal attempts in the Black Knights last two games.
*Freshman guard Bri Betz-White scored a career-high 19 points to help Loyola earn its second win of the season.
*Colgate junior forward Josie Stockill scored all 18 of her career-high 18 points in the second half of a 62-61 loss to Kent State.
*Sophomore forward Claire DeBoer scored a season-high 21 points on a perfect 8-for-8 from the field in the Bison win over Mount St. Mary’s.
*Sophomore forward Lexi Martins averaged 16 points per game as Lehigh went 1-1 in the ASU Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
