FAIRFAX STATION, Va. – The Navy women’s rowing team completed the fall portion of its 2014 schedule with a three-for-three showing at the Head of the Occoquan. Racing on its longest course of the fall, the Mids won the Championship Eights, Novice Eights and Championship Fours events.
Taking on a field of 35 crews, the Mids in the Championship Eights race cruised to a 10.05-second victory with a time of 17:11.03. Duquesne finished runner-up at 17:21.08. Navy’s other two entries in the race finished 10th at 18:11.29 and 19th at 19:03.75.
The Class of 2018 was in action next in the Novice Eights event. Racing versus a field of 20, Navy took first and 11th place. The Mids’ top boat finished 3.04 seconds ahead of George Washington with a time of 18:34.87. Navy’s second entry completed the nearly-three mile course in 20:45.89.
The final competition of the afternoon saw the crews of the top two varsity boats race again in fours action. Taking on 35 boats in the Championship Fours event, Navy dominated the field with all four crews finishing amongst the top 11. The Mids’ top boat scorched its competitors with a time of 18:45.21, over 42 seconds ahead of Duquesne’s top entry. Navy’s second crew placed third with a 19:28.38 result. Boats three and four finished eighth and 11th, respectively with times of 20:04.72 and 20:14.13.
The Head of the Occoquan was Navy’s final event until March 28 when it will race in Cherry Hill, N.J. at the 2015 Murphy Cup.
