W. Rowing. Women’s Rowing Set to Conclude Fall Season at Head of the Occoquan

Oct. 31, 2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women’s rowing team will wrap up its 2014 fall slate of competition on Saturday, Nov. 1 with action at the Head of the Occoquan. Hosted at the Sandy Run Regional Park in Fairfax Station, Va., the Mids will begin racing in the first of its three events at 11:40 a.m.

Navy will have nine total boats racing in Saturday. Three crews will kick off the slate of racing in the Championship Eights event at 11:40 a.m. A little over two hours later at 2:00 p.m., the Mids will be back in action with two entries in the Collegiate Novice Eights race. The Championship Fours race at 2:30 p.m. will close out the day for Navy. The Mids will have four entries in that event.

Saturday marks the first time in recent history that Navy has entered its varsity athletes in Head of the Occoquan racing. Normally, the event serves as a showcase for the Mids’ freshmen class.

“We are excited to be taking the Varsity, as well as the Novices to the Head of the Occoquan this year,” said Navy assistant coach Sidney Thorsten. “This is always a fun race for the fourth class because we combine the varsity plebes and the novice plebes so that the Class of 2018 gets to row together in the last race of the season.”

“We will also be doubling up our first two Varsity boats into the Championship Fours, which allows us to mix up the lineups a little bit and do some inter-squad racing as well. We are ready to put everything that we have worked on this fall together and end the season on a great note.”

For those traveling to Sandy Run Regional Park, the best location to watch the race action will be at the Sandy Run Boathouse.

Navy Racing Schedule

11:40 a.m. – Women’s Championship 8+ (3 boats entered)

2:00 p.m. – Women’s Collegiate Novice 8+ (2 boats entered)

2:30 p.m. – Women’s Championship 4+ (4 boats entered)
