CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – American University clinched the 2014 Patriot League Volleyball regular season title with a 3-1 win at Colgate on Friday night. The Eagles will host the Patriot League Tournament Nov. 22-23 at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C. for the fourth time in five years.
Army and Navy also secured spots in the Patriot League Tournament with wins on Friday night. The Black Knights defeated Lafayette 3-0 and the Mids beat Holy Cross 3-0. The outcome of those two matches, coupled with Colgate’s loss to American eliminated both the Raiders and Holy Cross from postseason contention.
American and Lehigh will be the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, for the two-day Patriot League Tournament. Army and Navy still play each other in the final game of the regular season with that outcome possibly impacting the order of the final two seeds.
American won the 2013 Patriot League Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 win over Lehigh in the semifinals and a 3-0 win over Colgate in the championship match. The Eagles have won 28 straight games over Patriot League opponents heading in to the regular finale against Lehigh.
Army has qualified for the field for the 16th consecutive season, American its 14th and Lehigh is making a fourth straight appearance. Navy returns to the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2007.
The winners of the semifinal round matches on Saturday, Nov. 22 will advance to the Patriot League Championship on Sunday, Nov. 23. The Patriot League Champion will receive the League’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
