Easton, Pa. – Patriot League-leading American swept the Lafayette volleyball team on Friday night inside Kirby Sports Center. Brianne Giangiobbe led the Lafayette attack with a team-high 7 kills.

Lafayette moved to 4-10 overall and 1-11 in Patriot League play. The Eagles remained perfect in Patriot League matches, with a 10-0 record. Danielle Towslee and Jet Manzi finished with six and five kills, respectively. Manzi and Lauren Pisauro led the team with 12 digs, while Tori Smith handed out 15 assists. American was led by Monika Smidova’s nine kills, 27 assists and 13 digs.

The Leopards took an early 5-3 lead on back-to-back kills from Katy Rooney and Giangiobbe. After the Eagles tied the set at seven, a service ace from Sarah Moult and a kill from Tori Smith gave Lafayette a 9-7 advantage. American used 5-1 spurt to take a 14-10 lead midway through the game. The Leopards pulled to within three on multiple occasions, but were unable to get any closer as the Eagles took the opening set, 25-20.

American jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second game. The Leopards used a 6-2 run, highlighted by a pair of kills from Giangiobbe, to tie the set at nine. The Eagles scored the next two points, before a Smith kill pulled Lafayette back within a point, 11-10. American went on 14-5 run to close out the set, 25-15, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Eagles took an early 9-3 advantage in the third set. Lafayette trimmed the deficit to three, 10-7, on kills from Towslee and Giangiobbe and an ace from Samantha Volk. American used a 15-4 spurt to take the third set, 25-11 and the match, 3-0.

Lafayette is back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when the Leopards host Loyola.
