BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Rosa Moriello defended her individual Patriot League title to help pace the Boston University women’s cross country team to the program’s second straight Patriot League Championship on Saturday at Lehigh University’s Cross Country Course.
It was as close a finish as possible for the Terriers, as both BU and Bucknell finished with a score of 52 points. The Terriers took the tiebreaker, however, to claim their second conference crown in as many seasons. The Terriers’ first three runners placed better than Bucknell’s top three finishers, securing the victory for BU. Army and Navy tied for third with 70 points each.
Moriello finished first for the second consecutive season thanks to a time of 20:18.10, 12 seconds faster than Lehigh’s Elizabeth Weiler, who finished second. The Naugatuck, Connecticut, native was named Runner of the Year while head coach Bruce Lehane was selected as Coach of the Year. Two other Terriers joined Moriello in the top 10, as sophomore Sarah Saccoach was sixth (21:15.30) and junior Shelby Stableford placed ninth (21:21.20).
Junior Michelle Sumner posted a 16th-place performance with a time of 21:35.20, followed by sophomore Hallie Armstrong, whose 20th-place time of 21:44.20 helped the Terriers edge Bucknell for the title.
Rachel Lotterman finished 33rd with a time of 22:06.00 while freshman Alex Osman was 50th with a time of 22:23.40. Junior Erin Pierce had a time of 22:35.10, followed by Alexia Zawadzke, who debuted with a time of 23:48.30. Fellow freshman Paige Ferrucci crossed the finish line in 23:48.30. Sophomore Colleen Tretheway (24:08.40) and freshman Jenny Mistretta (24:09.30) rounded out the Terrier contingent.
BU will be back in action on Nov. 14 at the NCAA Northeast Regional.
