CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy women’s soccer freshman midfielder Margaret Woodward (Palm Harbor, Fla.) earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors, which was announced by the conference office on Monday. Woodward also garnered the NAAA Athlete of the Week.
In her first collegiate game, Woodward came off the bench for the Mids in the 74th minute against UMBC in the season opener and made an instant impact 10 minutes later. After classmate Mary August (Arnold, Md.) tallied the equalizing goal in the 83rd minute, Woodward headed in her first career goal off a corner kick in the 85th minute for the game-winning goal. The Palm Harbor, Florida native capped off Navy’s run of three-straight goals, in a span of 18 minutes, to defeat the Retrievers, 3-2.
Woodward is the 19th different freshman in program history to be honored with the weekly laurel since its inception in 2001. She is the first Mid to garner the weekly honor since teammate Clare MacAdam was recognized twice last season.
Navy will be home this weekend for two matches, beginning with VMI on Friday at 7 p.m. then UConn on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed live and for free on PatriotLeague.TV.
