Three-star cornerback Shawn Davis committed to Florida on Saturday, giving the Gators 16 commits for the 2017 class.

Just over a month after he visited Gainesville for the Gators’ Friday Night Lights recruiting camp, 3-star prospect Shawn Davis has made it official.

The nation’s No. 34 cornerback and the No. 6-ranked cornerback in the Sunshine State committed to Florida on Saturday. He was the second addition to the class in two days, as 4-star defensive tackle Fred Hansard pledged via a video Friday morning.

Davis chose Jim McElwain’s Gators over Alabama, Florida State, Miami and Tennessee. However, it was Mark Richt’s Hurricanes that came the closest to stealing his commitment away from Florida.

A week before the Miami native visited Gainesville, he was in Coral Gables for Miami’s Paradise camp. The ‘Canes and Gators have been jockeying for position all summer, but the chance to play for McElwain and defensive backs coach Torrian Gray helped land Davis in orange and blue.

Florida now has three defensive backs pledged to its 2017 class, which moved up from No. 13 to No. 10 in the rankings following Hansard’s decision and jumped ahead of Clemson to No. 9 after Davis’ pledge. The Gators now have 2,443 recruiting points. Four-star cornerback Elijah Blades made his commitment on June 22. And 4-star cornerback Marco Wilson, the younger brother of current Gators cornerback Quincy Wilson, verbally committed on Aug. 1.

Blades’ role for Florida could help add to its 2018 class, too. He’s close with 4-star cornerback Bookie Radley-Hiles, who recently called the Gators his No. 1 school.
