John Lucas Sr. 

One of the first great Maryland players was Hall of Famer John Lucas Sr. During the 1970s, Lucas helped elevate the program to national prominence with their first national title appearance.

John was a floor general, who averaged nearly six assists per game and scored 18.3 PPG. He was a 3x All-ACC player and the school’s all-time assists leader for 30 years.

Lucas later became the #1 overall NBA draft pick in 1976 and a hall of famer.

Len Bias(1982-1986)

Len Bias is easily one of the all-time top 5 Maryland men’s basketball players. He was Maryland’s top big man during the 1980s who was almost unstoppable.

Bias led the Terrapins to the ACC title in 1984 and won ACC POTY twice. Almost 40 years later and people still talk about his epic 35-point performance against #1 UNC in 1986.

Unfortunately, Bias’s life was tragically cut short after dying from a cocaine induced heart arrhythmia. Many felt that he could’ve been one of the greatest big men ever.

Buck Williams(1978-1981)

Buck Williams made his mark as one of the top 5 Maryland men’s basketball players during the late 1970s. The Maryland big man was only 6’8”, but out muscles and worked taller players.

Williams was known for his physical style, which was an anchor for Maryland’s ACC title runs. The Terrapin legend averaged a double-double for his career numbers with 13.3 PPG and 10.9 rebounds.

Buck still owns the school record for single-season field goal percentage and is second in rebounds.

Joe Smith(1993-1995)

Joe Smith only played for two years, but became one of the top 5 Maryland men’s basketball players ever. The 1994 ACC ROTY transformed Maryland into a tournament team after a five year drought.

During Smith’s sophomore year, he evolved into an elite player on both offense and defense. His 20.2 PPG and 10.7 rebounds earned him the NCAA POTY, ACC POTY, and First-Team All-American honors.

Joe’s time in Maryland was brief, but dominant and made him the #1 pick in the 1995 NBA draft.

Juan Dixon

In the eyes of many Terrapin alumni, Juan Dixon is #1 on the top 5 Maryland men’s basketball players list. Dixon was the heart and soul of the Terrapins from 1998 to 2002.

In 2002, he had an incredible year, which was the best in school history. Juan’s clutch plays against Indiana in the finals led Maryland to winning the school’s only national title.

That year, Dixon was by far the best player and won every award. He’s the only Terp with over 2,000 points, 200 career steals, and is still the school’s leading scorer.
