Alabama star running back Bo Scarbrough is returning from a leg injury he suffered in the College Football Playoff national championship game. Head coach Nick Saban said that Scarbrough’s recovery is going quite well.

The return to full health of running back Bo Scarbrough will be one of the keys to Alabama’s 2017 season, as the Crimson Tide look to once again make the College Football Playoff.

Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide squad is the only team in the nation to make each of the first three CFP’s, and a big year from Scarbrough will be needed to make it a perfect 4-for-4.

After breaking his leg in the last-second national championship loss to Clemson this past January, the big and athletic tailback is recovering quite well from his setback. The injury was labeled a fracture in his lower right leg that did not require surgery, and he was able to put weight on the leg after it occurred. Scarbrough rushed for 812 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2016, but he started to show his true full potential in the CFP games against Washington and Clemson.

Following the Crimson Tide’s second spring scrimmage on Friday, Saban told reporters that Scarbrough was at “pretty much full speed” following his setback against the Tigers. That’s great news for the Tide and really bad news for opposing SEC defenses.

However, Scarbrough donned a black, non-contact jersey and was held out of the scrimmage for precautionary reasons. He did, though, lead the way when the team’s running backs went through drills before it started. Saban said he has been doing “just about everything in practice,” so there is no concern about a return to full health. ‘Bama would simply rather be safe than sorry.

The same can be said for fellow running back Damien Harris, who led Alabama in rushing last season. He did not participate in Friday’s scrimmage either after spraining his foot in last Saturday’s scrimmage. He is considered day-to-day.

“We’re not going to take any chances with any of these guys pushing them into A-Day,” Saban said.

While Scarbrough and Harris will lead the way when the 2017 season kicks off in a much-anticipated showdown against Florida State in Atlanta, ‘Bama is expected to have plenty of depth at running back in the fall. Sophomores Josh Jacobs and B.J. Emmons as well as freshmen Najee Harris and Brian Robinson will be in the mix, but there’s no question that a healthy Scarbrough will be a difference-maker on the ground.
