Appalachian State vs. Troy prediction and game preview. Projecting who wins the game between the Mountaineers and Trojans.

Appalachian State at Troy Game Preview

When: Saturday, November 12 – 3:30 p.m. ET
Where: Veterans Memorial Stadium, Troy, AL
Broadcast: ESPN3

It’s the game of the year in the Sun Belt Conference and a sneaky-good matchup for fans unfamiliar with the two programs. Appalachian State and Troy carry six-game winning streaks into Week 11, and neither has suffered a league loss in 2016. The winner takes a quantum leap toward a crown, though Arkansas State still looms as a possible contender. The Mountaineers and the Trojans are also linked by the moral victories they earned during the non-conference portion of the September. App State opened the campaign by dragging Tennessee into overtime, while Troy lost to Clemson in Death Valley by only six points in Week 2.

What To Know About Appalachian State

Stout defensive play. A deep ground game led by Marcus Cox and Jalin Moore. Seasoned quarterback Taylor Lamb. The Mountaineers are built for a championship. Moore leads the league in rushing, but Cox is the feature back now that he’s returned from injury. Lamb is elusive, too, though he hasn’t stretched defenses much this year, which could be a problem Saturday. The D is outstanding, ranking sixth nationally against the run and No. 18 in yards per play allowed. Nate Woody’s unit gets contributions at every level, headlined by linebacker Kennan Gilchrist and edge rushers Dezmin Reed and Tee Sims.

What to Know About Troy

In so many ways, the Trojans are identical to the Mountaineers. Jordan Chunn is Troy’s version of Cox and Moore, and Brandon Silvers has been an even better passer than Lamb. And like Appalachian State, Troy has been airtight on D for much of the year. Linemen Rashad Dillard and Baron Poole are setting the tone for a unit that leads the Sun Belt in run defense and has 20 takeaways. The Trojans’ success in the trenches is not relegated to the defense either. Left tackle Antonio Garcia and the O-line have yielded just two sacks, the fewest in the FBS.

Advantages

Offense: Troy. The Mountaineers have a deeper backfield now that Cox has returned, but Silvers is the better passer and the Trojans average 39 points per game.

Defense: Appalachian State. But by the smallest of margins. The Mountaineer pass defense has been tough to penetrate this season.

Special Teams: Troy. The Trojans have the more accurate kicker, Ryan Kay, which could loom large in such a close matchup.

Coaching: Push. Troy’s Neal Brown and App State’s Scott Satterfield are two of the more unheralded young coaches in America.

Intangibles: Troy. Both teams are confident and healthy. Playing at home tips the scales in the Trojans’ favor.

Matchup To Watch

Cox and Moore vs. Troy safeties Cedarius Rookard and Kris Weatherspoon

The Trojans will be committed to stopping the Mountaineer ground game, especially since Lamb has been less threatening through the air this fall. And it’s going to require a collaborative effort that includes Rookard and Weatherspoon flying up from the back end to support an underrated and very active front seven.

Appalachian State vs. Troy Prediction

There’s a ton at stake for these two schools and very little, if any, daylight between them. The defenses are a wash, while Appalachian State has a slight edge in the ground game. However, the difference will be Silvers, who’ll give Troy a chance to pop a big or two through the air to keep the Mountaineer defense honest. He’ll have to be careful against that ball-hawking secondary, but he’ll be up to the challenge. In a seesaw battle that doesn’t get decided until late in the fourth, the Trojans will survive at home to keep title hopes alive.

Appalachian State vs. Troy Score Prediction: Troy 24, Appalachian State 23
