After months and months of speculation, rumors, posturing and (mis)information, the time is finally upon us. On Monday evening, the Big 12 will hold a press conference regarding league expansion.

While expansion has been the term du jour for the past couple of years, talks really heated up this summer and have carried well into football season. There are cases to be made for both sides of the deal.

A pro-expansion argument works from a purely logical standpoint. Right now the Big 12 is comprised of only 10 schools. It would also, theoretically, help expand the brand beyond its Midwestern stronghold – something that the league sought when folding West Virginia in back in 2012. Adding more programs would also increase league stability, as the Big 12 has been ground for poaching by the likes of the Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC.

A counter argument to expansion is that, from a football vantage point, it’s unnecessary. The Big 12 has been granted the right to hold a conference championship game despite having the requisite 12-or-more schools.

There’s also the question of whether any suitors are worth adding. Programs such as Cincinnati, UCF, USF, Houston, UConn and Memphis were all reportedly in the fold for inclusion. While there are some large markets – namely Central Florida and East Texas – can those programs compete consistently enough to add value to the Big 12, or will they merely water down the brand?

Whatever verdict is delivered in the Big 12’s expansion press conference will put to rest – at least temporarily – a long subplot that’s been hanging over the league’s head.
