Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops commented on the status of Baker Mayfield for the first time since the quarterback’s arrest in February.

It has been an interesting offseason for Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield so far, as he was arrested in February and charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct, fleeing and resisting arrest in Washington County, Arkansas.

Video tape of the incident, including police officers tackling a fleeing Mayfield, was released earlier this month, and for the first time since the arrest, Mayfield’s coach Bob Stoops commented on the events.

“Very disappointed that Baker put himself in that situation,” Stoops said. “His reaction — he’s very hurt he put himself in that situation, as well. I’m sure it’s hurt him, embarrassed him. He can overcome it, and I’m sure he will.”

Mayfield, considered to be one of the favorites for the Heisman Trophy next season, will practice this spring, per Stoops, and no decision on his status will be made until the case is resolved.

In 2016, Mayfield threw 3,965 yards and 40 touchdowns while only being intercepted eight times. He completed 70.9% of his passes, while rushing for six scores as well.

Mayfield is scheduled to appear in court on April 7.
