Boise State vs. Colorado State prediction and game preview. Projecting who wins Saturday night’s matchup between the Broncos and Rams.

When: Saturday, Oct. 15 – 10:15 p.m. ET
Where: Albertsons Stadium, Boise, Idaho
TV Broadcast: ESPN2

Whoa, look at what we have here. Head coach Bryan Harsin has his Broncos (5-0) playing at a high level and, with the exception of a 31-28 win over Washington State in Week 2, they’ve barely sniffed a loss this season. Last weekend, Boise State went on the road to New Mexico and demolished the Lobos, 49-21. The Broncos dropped 28 points in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 42-7 lead. After tacking on a touchdown in the third quarter, Boise State cruised to victory.

As for Mike Bobo’s Rams (3-3), it’s been a rocky first half of the season. After starting out 2-1 through the first three weeks, Colorado State dropped back-to-back games against Minnesota and Wyoming. Last Saturday, the Rams stayed at home to host Utah State, and they took down the Aggies, 31-24. Colorado State trailed at halftime, 24-10, but scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to take the win.

They haven’t squared off too often, but when they have, it’s been all Boise State, all the time. The Broncos lead the all-time series, 5-0, and they took last year’s meeting in Fort Collins, 41-10.

What To Know About Boise State

Brett Rypien is unreal. The true sophomore quarterback has a lot of talent, and he showed it off last weekend in the win over New Mexico. Rypien completed 21-of-28 passes for 391 yards and five touchdowns. It was easily his best performance of the season thus far. He’s completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 1,415 yards and 11 touchdowns to only three interceptions. He found Thomas Sperbeck nine times against the Lobos for 198 yards and two touchdowns. Cedric Wilson reeled in nine catches as well for 167 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Jeremy McNichols also provided some firepower with 54 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

What to Know About Colorado State

There’s some bad news in Fort Collins. Quarterback Collin Hill is out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Hill had completed 58.1 percent of his passes for 1,096 yards and eight touchdowns before the injury. The starting job will now be turned back over to Nick Stevens, who lost the job early in the season. Stevens has completed 35.7 percent of his passes for 77 yards and two interceptions. When he replaced Hill in the win over Utah State, Stevens completed 3-of-7 passes for 37 yards.

In that win, the Rams got a big effort from tailback Dalyn Dawkins, who rushed for 125 yards on 14 carries. He got some help from Izzy Matthews, who took 23 carries for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

Advantages

Offense: Boise State – Hill is out, and Rypien is a monster from the pocket.

Defense: Boise State – The Broncos are No. 45 in total defense (370.6 yards/game) and No. 19 in scoring defense (18.6 points/game).

Special Teams: Boise State – Wilson has already returned a punt for a touchdown and is averaging 26 yards per kick return.

Coaching: Boise State – Harsin is a fantastic head coach with an undefeated team right now.

Matchup To Watch

Nick Stevens vs. Boise State defense

This could get ugly in a hurry. Stevens had a solid year in 2015, but that was 2015. There’s a reason why he lost the starting job earlier this season. He’ll have to be smart with the football and work the running game to set up the passing attack. When he can, he’ll have to rely on Michael Gallup to pick up yards after the catch and use Dawkins as a safety net when the Broncos apply pressure. If Boise State can get hands in his face, it can force some turnovers and flip the field quickly.

Betting Odds

Spread: Boise State -31.5
Over/Under: 59

Boise State vs. Colorado State Prediction

This will be all Boise State. From start to finish, the Broncos are going to run circles around the Rams. Rypien will come out firing and find Wilson early to get Boise State on the board. He’ll end up throwing three more touchdowns, and the Broncos will let McNichols run wild yet again. He’ll rush for at least 100 yards and a score but will also catch one of Rypien’s touchdown strikes. Stevens will also get the Rams on the board through the air, but that will be Colorado State’s only touchdown. Harsin’s Broncos take this one easily.

Boise State vs. Colorado State Score Prediction: Boise State 45, Colorado State 16
