Four-star safety Cam Jones decommitted from Texas Tech, leaving the Red Raiders with four total commits in their 2018 recruiting class.

This certainly isn’t the Christmas present Kliff Kingsbury was hoping to get.

On Wednesday night, 4-star prospect Cam Jones decommitted from Texas Tech, leaving the Red Raiders with only four total commits in their 2018 recruiting class.

Jones, from Euless, Texas, is the No. 21-ranked safety and the No. 268 overall player in the 2018 cycle. He released a statement regarding his decision to back off his pledge to the Red Raiders.

“I would first like to thank the Texas Tech coaching staff and all the fans for supporting me. It’s been a great ride thus far. After sitting down with my mother and having a deep discussion regarding my future, I have made the decision to reopen my recruitment.”

Jones holds additional offers from Indiana, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, Oklahoma, UTSA and UCLA. However, others have shown interest, including Baylor, TCU, Texas and Texas A&M.

At 6-foot, 185 lbs Jones has been clocked at 4.56 seconds on his 40-yard dash, which is a flash in the pan of the kind of athleticism he has. He has a great feel for playing the position, bringing an ability to make plays deep over the middle and from within the box.

Jones can lay the wood, too. He isn’t afraid to lower his shoulder and go parallel to the ground in order to deliver a big hit.
