Report: Chad Morris Staying At SMU, Not Leaving For Baylor

Chad Morris is reportedly staying at SMU following his second season in Dallas. The Mustangs head coach had been linked to the impending opening at Baylor.

If Baylor wanted to bring in Chad Morris to stabilize and make the Bears program prominent again, it will have to look elsewhere.

According to Jessica Morrey of KCEN in Waco, TX, the SMU head coach is staying with the Mustangs program. He reportedly told his staff and players on Tuesday that he will not be leaving the school.

Morris was considered one of the top candidates for the gig at Baylor, which is searching for a new leader after Jim Grobe took over for Art Briles on an interim basis. The Bears are looking to start over after off-the-field issues and poor play dogged the team in 2016.

Morris just finished his second full season at SMU, which went 5-7 this fall and will very likely not be going bowling due to other five-win teams having stronger APR scores. The Mustangs were blown out, 75-31, to Navy in the regular season finale.

Still, 2016 was an improvement for a team that won two games in Morris’ debut campaign. The Ponies won just one game the year before he was hired.

Morris is considered one of the brightest offensive minds in the college game, and the Texas native’s familiarity with the Lone Star State’s high school coaching ranks was considered very appealing to the Baylor brass. Now the Bears must try to reel in someone similar who could maintain Baylor’s strong offensive brand, which is an attribute that new AD Mack Rhoades has stated he would like to have in a candidate.
