Clemson vs. Boston College Game Preview
When: Friday, Oct. 7 – 7:30 p.m. ET
Where: Alumni Stadium, Chestnut Hill, MA
TV Broadcast: ESPN
The Tigers (5-0, 2-0 ACC) rallied to beat Louisville in a crucial ACC Atlantic division contest on Saturday night in Death Valley behind Deshaun Watson’s five touchdowns (two in the final seven minutes) after the Cardinals had erased an 18-point deficit behind another spectacular performance by Lamar Jackson. Dabo Swinney’s Tigers did just enough to escape the Cards, stopping them a yard short on fourth down with 33 seconds left to hold on for a 42-36 win.
Meanwhile, the Eagles (3-2, 0-2) put on another strong defensive performance in a 35-3 win over Buffalo on Saturday, notching their second straight victory. Patrick Towles threw for two touchdowns, while Davon Jones and Jon Hilliman each ran for one. Boston College entered the game with the nation’s sixth-ranked defense and did nothing to hurt that ranking, suffocating the Bulls’ offense.
In last year’s meeting, Watson passed for three touchdowns and 420 yards as the Tigers had no problem with Boston College’s defense in a 34-17 victory Saturday night.
What To Know About Clemson
Watson didn’t play a clean game against Louisville, but he still showed off his special skill set. Despite tossing a career-high three interceptions and fumbling once against Louisville’s athletic defense, he threw for 306 yards on 20-of-31 passing and helped lead Clemson to four second-quarter scores and a 28-10 lead at the break. It was an offensive performance that looked very similar to the ones we were accustomed to seeing last year when the Tigers went on their College Football Playoff run.
What to Know About Boston College
Towles completed 14 of 25 passes for 234 yards with no interceptions against the Bulls, but he did have two fumbles. He will need to play clean football against a Tigers defense that is fierce and nasty. Boston College’s defense, meanwhile, showed that it can be nasty too by holding the Bulls to just 67 total yards, including just 26 on the ground. We need to see if the Eagles can give a better effort against a tough opponent than they gave in a 49-0 loss to Virginia Tech earlier this season.
Offense: Clemson. The Tigers have a gifted quarterback with a ton of playmakers surrounding him.
Defense: Even. Sure, the Tigers have more talented defenders. But Steve Addazio has made BC’s defense a rugged outfit. Still, it’s tough to go against a ‘D’ that features Christian Wilkins and Carlos Watkins up front.
Special Teams: Clemson. As long as he doesn’t drop the ball in celebration short of the goal line, Ray-Ray McCloud is always a candidate to take a punt return to the house.
Coaching: Clemson. Dabo Swinney has established himself as one of the best head coaches in the country.
Intangibles: Boston College. The Eagles will have a home crowd at night in their favor with nothing to lose against one of the best teams in the country.
Matchup To Watch
Towles vs. Clemson defensive front
The Kentucky transfer needs to play his best game of the season against the best defense he will face. He has had issues with getting rid of the football fast enough in the past, including against Virginia Tech, so he must be sharp against a Tigers front that features Wilkins and Watkins.
Spread: Clemson -16.5
Clemson vs. Boston College Prediction
The Eagles may be able to stymie the Clemson offense through the first half because of a sound defensive game plan, but this is an offense that is clicking on all cylinders after a few rough weeks to start the season. Watson and the Tigers love to shine under the bright lights on a big stage, and it will be no different this week as they break the game open in the second half.
Clemson vs. Boston College Score Prediction: Clemson 34, Boston College 13
