Clemson vs. NC State prediction roundtable with the Campus Insiders staff. Breaking down what will happen in the game between the Tigers and Wolfpack.
I had a lot of fun watching NC State roll around in the rain and beat Notre Dame last week. I never knew what was going to happen next with the weather adding another level of unpredictability. Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, it’s the complete opposite this week.
There’s no chance Clemson loses this game. DeShaun Watson will help the Tigers score plenty in a game that’s over by halftime.
Tough stretch for NC State here. They outlasted Notre Dame in a hurricane, now they’ve gotta travel to Clemson and Louisville. Diving deeper, there’s a five game stretch of ND, Clemson, Louisville, Boston College and FSU. None of that matters, of course, for this game, but damn if that isn’t a bear of a midseason slate. Dave Doeren bought himself a stay of execution last week against the Fighting irish; this week if the Wolfpack stay competitive, something that’ll be seen as a victory in itself. Clemson wins.
The win over Louisville was impressive. The win over Boston College was expected. Deshaun Watson hasn’t exactly dropped jaws so far this season, but he’s still been elite. And he’s going to keep the Tigers undefeated with a win over NC State. Watson will rack up the touchdowns, and Wayne Gallman will find the end zone, too. Clemson has this in the bag.
Wolfpack running back Matt Dayes ran for 126 yards last week against Notre Dame, but he’ll be going up against a much better Tigers rush defense in this one. In last year’s contest, the ‘Pack played the second half without Dayes after he suffered a toe injury, which affected the flow of the offense. If NC State wants to pull the upset, quarterback Ryan Finley will need to work with manageable third-down situations. I think Dave Doeren’s squad hangs with Dabo Swinney’s crew for three quarters, but a big Ray-Ray McCloud special teams play and too much offensive firepower help the Tigers pull away in the fourth quarter.
Now that the Wolfpack have finally dried out from that torrential rain that flooded the field during their win against Notre Dame, they can turn their focus on Deshaun Watson and the Tigers. Good luck with that. Since struggling earlier in the year, the Tigers have been rolling and will continue that with a big win.
