The Houston Cougars have had two recruits decommit in less than 24 hours from their 2017 recruiting class, and 3-star running back Daniel Young is the latest.
While Tom Herman recently secured his first notable commitment for the Texas Longhorns, not all is going well for his former employer, Houston, on the recruiting trail.
In less than 24 hours, Houston has seen two prospects decommit from its 2017 recruiting class, much to the dismay of new head coach Major Applewhite.
On Tuesday, 3-star offensive tackle Matt Huhn backed off his commitment and released a statement explaining why he was backing off his pledge to the Cougars.
“I would like to start by thanking the fans for all the support and encouragement. When I said you guys were the best, I meant it. I would also like to thank the players and commits that supported and recruited me throughout this process. This team and university will always have a spot in my heart. I’ve received nothing but love and encouragement, and I will never forget that. Thank you to the coaching staff for the opportunity to allow me to play for and represent the University of Houston, but I’m announcing my decommitment from the University of Houston. Thank you for the fantastic memories that I will always hold dear and cherish.”
And later on Tuesday night, the Cougars watched 3-star running back Daniel Young decommit from the class as well. He, too, released a statement on his decision.
“First, I would like to thank God for everything he has blessed me with and everything that’s on the way. And after long talks with myself, my family, and God … I have made the decision to decommit from the University of Houston. I would like to thank the UH Staff for everything. I genuinely wish UH the best.”
Huhn is ranked as the No. 51 offensive tackle in the nation, and Young is ranked as its No. 76 running back. Huhn, a San Antonio native, appears to now be leaning toward SMU. Young, who’s from Houston, received an offer from Herman’s staff on Dec. 8 and will likely follow the former Cougars head coach to Austin.
As expected, Young has committed to the Longhorns, offering the following statement:
“First off I have to thank god and my family for everything and with the support of my family and friends I would like to announce I am committing to the University of Texas #HookEm [sic]”
